On October 30, the
Vance Center successfully organized its
first annual reception for Latin
American associates working at New York
law firms. The event provided a
networking opportunity for young Latin
American lawyers and a chance for them
to learn about undertaking pro bono
work. This reception was part of the
Vance Center’s effort to reach out to young
Latin American lawyers, many of whom
will return to law firms in their home
countries that will have signed or will
be signing the Pro Bono Declaration
for the Americas.

The Pro
Bono Declaration for the
Americas is a statement that defines
and sets forth a measurable standard for
a lawyer’s responsibilities and pro bono
work throughout the region. Law firms
throughout Latin America are in the
process of signing the Declaration and
committing to carrying out an average of
20 hours of pro bono work per lawyer per
year starting in January 2008.
