Chilean
Lawyer Joins Vance Center Staff
March
1, 2006
Felipe
Lecaros, a Chilean lawyer with
corporate and public interest law
experience in both Chile and the
United States, has joined the Vance Center as coordinator
for the Global Network for Justice
Initiatives.
Felipe's arrival will enable the Vance
Center to significantly expand its
access to justice work in Latin
America, said Joan Vermeulen, the
Center's director. "His knowledge of
the conditions in the region, as well
as his relationships with lawyers
working in both private firms and
public interest offices and teaching
at law schools, will help strengthen
the pro bono chain throughout Latin
America."
Mr. Lecaros will concentrate much of
his efforts on the Global Network for
Justice Initiatives, a web-based
community of justice reform advocates
who will share ideas and information
and work collaboratively to expand
access to justice projects. Since
joining the Center, his work has
already sparked the creation of a
micro enterprise clinic at Diego
Portales University in Santiago, to
provide pro bono assistance to micro
entrepreneurs by law students and
private lawyers recruited through
Fundacion Pro Bono.
Prior to joining the
staff, Mr. Lecaros was a volunteer attorney
with the Vance Center where he helped
to organize the
Strategy
Summit for the Americas as the New
York City Bar.
Previously,
Mr. Lecaros was an associate at Cruz
& Cia, Abogados and legal
advisor to the Chilean-Brazilian Chamber
of Commerce, in Santiago, Chile
where his practice primarily focused
on corporate issues. Mr. Lecaros was
also a foreign Associate at O'Melveny
& Myers, Washington D.C. office.
He is a member of the Colegio de Abogados
de Chile and the New York City
Bar Association and is admitted to
practice both in Chile and in New
York.
Mr. Lecaros obtained his J.D. from
Diego Portales University School of
Law, a Masters in Corporate Law from
Pontificia Universidad Católica de
Chile and an LL.M from Duke University
School of Law.
Of
his new
position at the Vance Center, Mr.
Lecaros said,
"I'm delighted to work at the Vance
Center. I find the idea of working on
access to justice issues very
challenging and a compelling task for
any Latin American lawyer."
