Legal Strategies For Civil Rights”

-- The 50th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education --

What: Panel Discussion of Supreme Court Decision

When: Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at 6 p.m.

Where: House of the Association, 42 West 44th Street

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education, this panel will explore the role that impact litigation does and should play in the struggle for civil rights. We will ask whether impact litigation is the most effective way of working for social justice reforms in the current legal and political climate, and how litigation can be most effective in educating the public and the courts on civil rights issues. We will also explore the relationship between impact litigation and grass roots organizing efforts and the effect of changing demographics on litigation strategies and remedies.

MARIANNE ENGLEMAN-LADO, General Counsel, N.Y. Lawyers for the Public Interest

Speakers:
DENNIS PARKER, Bureau Chief, Civil Rights Bureau, NYS Department of Law
MANUEL DEL VALLE, Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, AmeriChoice
