New York 1 Television Presents Its
“ New Yorkers of the Week” Award to
The Association’s City Bar Chorus
NY1 News, the Manhattan-based cable-TV news station,
awarded the Association’s City Bar Chorus its
distinguished “New Yorkers of the Week Award” in
recognition of the choir’s community outreach
efforts that bring the gift of music to venues such
as hospitals, fire houses, senior residences and
nursing homes, pediatric facilities, AIDS residences
and rehabilitation facilities.
The three-minute TV segment honoring the choir’s
community service work was aired frequently during
the weekend of Friday, January 30 to Monday, February
2, on NY1 News.
Composed of more than 55 members, the City Bar Chorus
is made up solely of legal professionals that include
attorneys, paralegals, legal secretaries, law students
and judges, all of whom contribute their time and
talents on a volunteer basis.
“Our repertoire ranges from opera to ABBA,
and from Broadway to the Beatles,” said Israella
Mayeri, City Bar Chorus co-chair. “The chorus
also enjoys singing jazz arrangements and folk and
spiritual songs of many traditions. We’ve sung
in up to 8-part harmony in English, Latin, Hebrew
and Swahili!
“A typical show not only has us singing for
the audience, but also gets the audience singing
with us. We are known for our sing-alongs! At pediatric
venues such as Bellevue, we also encourage participation
by having audience volunteers join the conductor
to ‘help’ her conduct the chorus.”
The group holds auditions throughout the year. For
