“ Reflections on the First Half-Century of Brown v. Board of Ed”

What: Book author lecture
When: Monday, November 29, 2004; from 7 to 9 p.m.
Where: House of the Association, 42 West 44th Street

Come visit the NYC Bar Association when it welcomes Harvard Law School Professor and civil rights scholar Charles J. Ogletree, Jr. At the invitation of the Association’s Books at the Bar Committee, Ogletree will discuss his new book “All Deliberate Speed: Reflections on the First Half-Century of Brown v. Board of Education” -- a combination of a personal memoir and a legal analysis of the challenges to the Brown mandate. Professor Ogletree will examine the judicial, legislative and societal resistance to embracing an integrated public education system and its effect on affirmative action. The professor’s long record of commitment to public schools and higher education helped secure his appointment to head the American Bar Association’s Brown v. Board of Education Commission, which was created to educate the public about the history and importance of the landmark civil rights decision on its 50th anniversary.

There is no charge for admission. The program will be preceded by a wine and cheese reception at 6 p.m. Members of the media, please note: Permission to quote Professor Ogletree from an interview that appears in the November issue of the Association’s monthly newsletter, “44th Street Notes,” may be obtained by contacting Matt Kovary, (212) 382-6713.

Speaker:
CHARLES J. OGLETREE, JR., Jesse Climenko Professor of Law and Vice Dean for the Clinical Programs, Harvard Law School.
